Cheshire has bucked the national trend with an alarming rise in the number of road accident victims, new figures show.
A total of 78 people were killed on the county's roads last year compared to 67 in 2004, an increase of 16.7%
At the same time, there were 708 serious injuries in 2005, a 7.9% rise on the 656 recorded in the previous year.
In contrast, there was a small fall in the deaths on Merseyside's roads (from 62 to 59) and a similar decline in serious injuries (from 708 to 651)
That was in line with the national picture, where there was a 1% fall to 3,201 deaths.
